2027年度から就役予定のイージス・システム搭載艦（ASEV）は、日本独自に開発・建造される最新鋭の弾道ミサイル防衛（BMD）専用艦である。アメリカの協力を受けつつも、アーレイ・バーク級ではなく日本が設計するこの艦は、イージス・システムBMD 5.1搭載、VLSは128セル以上、基準排水量は約1.2万トン規模と、世界でも異例の巨大な艦となる。
