日本は現在、最大速度マッハ6以上・対艦・迎撃・対空支援を想定した電磁加速砲＝レールガンの研究開発を進めており、2022年には防衛装備庁が「世界最高クラスの初速」実現に成功したと発表。

海上自衛隊の艦艇や地上プラットフォームに搭載する構想も公表されており、実戦配備を視野に入れた技術成熟が注目されている。
